Choosing an electric vehicle is a critical decision for many buyers. Among electric SUVs, the Tesla Model Y and Toyota bZ stand out, each offering unique features and value. Understanding the differences between these vehicles can help you make an informed choice.
Range and Charging
Originally named the bZ4X, Toyota’s all-electric SUV has undergone substantial revisions, warranting a new name. The 2026 bZ front-wheel-drive version offers an impressive range. EPA estimates suggest it can cover up to 314 miles per charge. Edmunds’ testing extends that range, showcasing a 331-mile capability.
Tesla’s Model Y provides various range options based on its version. The Premium Rear-Wheel Drive variant boasts an EPA-estimated range of 357 miles, though Edmunds hasn’t independently tested this specific version. Other Model Ys have consistently matched their EPA range estimates.
Both vehicles exhibited similar charging speeds at public fast-charging stations, each potentially gaining around 100 miles of range in 15 minutes. Tesla’s Supercharger network offers more convenience for Model Y users.

Driving Experience and Interior Space
The Tesla Model Y delivers a dynamic driving experience. It offers quick acceleration and a stable, sporty feel during turns. Road and wind noise is minimal in the cabin, and front seats are adjustable for maximum comfort.
The Toyota bZ enhances its acceleration capability in the 2026 model, outperforming the base Model Y in Edmunds’ 0-to-60 mph testing. Though its ride over bumps is comfortable, the bZ doesn’t handle corners as adeptly as the Model Y.
Interior space is more generous in the Model Y, providing additional legroom for passengers and convenience for installing car seats. It also offers more cargo space.
Winner: Model Y
Technology
Tesla’s infotainment system shines with a straightforward interface and responsive performance. It includes dual wireless chargers and advanced driver assistance features. Notably, the Full Self-Driving feature supports hands-free driving on highways and city streets. However, Tesla lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
Toyota’s new infotainment system, with a 14.1-inch touchscreen, supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, adding convenience. It includes multiple fast-charging USB-C ports and standard driver assistance features. Toyota’s hands-free driving feature is limited to low speeds on highways.
Winner: Model Y
Pricing and Value
The base Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive starts at $41,630 including destination, but lacks some desirable features. For added power and range, the Model Y Premium version costs $51,630.
The Toyota bZ offers improved performance and starts at $36,495, presenting a well-equipped and cost-effective option. The top-line bZ Limited resembles the Model Y Premium in features, priced at $46,895.
Winner: bZ
Edmunds says: The Toyota bZ has notably improved, offering decent performance and value, especially with its lower starting price. Yet, the Tesla Model Y remains a leader in the segment with its superior technology and performance.
