Ford has announced a recall of nearly 420,000 vehicles due to a seat belt issue that poses a risk of injury in the event of a crash. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report released on Tuesday, the recall affects specific Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator models from the years 2018 to 2022.
The problem identified involves seat belts that may inadvertently lock, preventing proper retraction or extension. This malfunction increases the risk of injury during a crash. Additionally, in some cases, individuals might suffer injuries if the seat belt retracts suddenly.
This recall expands and replaces two previous recalls by NHTSA. Ford has been notified of two warranty claims and two field reports related to this latest issue. Furthermore, the company is aware of one injury associated with the problem.
Vehicle owners will receive mail notifications concerning the recall. Ford and Lincoln dealers will inspect both front seat belt retractors and replace defective ones free of charge. In addition, Ford has issued a do-not-drive advisory affecting thousands of Bronco Sport and Maverick vehicles due to suspension system issues.
NHTSA reports that front lower control arm ball joints may have been improperly installed or repaired at assembly plants, leading to potential detachment from the front wheel knuckle. A detached control arm can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing crash risk.
This recall affects 4,600 Bronco Sport vehicles from 2021 through 2026 and Maverick vehicles from 2022 through 2026. Dealers will inspect and repair the front lower control arm ball joints as needed, at no cost.
