Concerns and Upgrades for New Air Force One Jet

President Donald Trump announced the new Air Force One plane, gifted by Qatar, will undergo upgrades to enhance its capabilities. Questions about the plane’s security features arose when Trump returned from the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey. Reporters asked whether the jet lacked missile-defense systems.

Trump responded by highlighting the plane’s capabilities. He mentioned, “It has a lot of capability,” and noted that upgrades will be completed in about a month. He did not provide specifics on the upgrades.

Earlier, Trump’s decision to use an alternate presidential aircraft after attending a NATO summit in Turkey attracted attention. This switch led to speculations about the reasons behind abandoning the Qatari-donated jet. Concerns about the readiness of the new Air Force One surfaced.

During his media interactions, Trump dismissed links to security concerns, yet acknowledged the dangers faced by presidents. He remarked, “You know the life of a president is very dangerous,” and added he was “No. 1 on the kill list for Iran.” NBC News highlighted the Secret Service’s advice, urging Trump to use the previous aircraft due to proximity to the Middle East amid resumed tensions with Iran.

The Justice Department subpoenaed four New York Times journalists for their stories on security issues related to the new Air Force One. This luxurious Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet was gifted by Qatar’s royal family in 2025. In June, Trump marked its arrival at Joint Base Andrews, calling it a “flying White House at a level of luxury no one has ever seen before.” The plane boasts a red, white, and dark-blue color scheme, distinct from the previous lighter blue design. Trump used this plane for travel to North Dakota on July 1, attending an event dedicated to Theodore Roosevelt.

The Qatari jet serves as a temporary Air Force One until Boeing completes the next-generation planes projected for delivery in 2028.
