Construction Rig Collapse in Miami Injures Four, Ignites Vehicle Fire

In Miami’s Brickell neighborhood, a construction rig fell onto three vehicles and a container on Monday, injuring four people and starting a vehicle fire. Two construction workers were trapped in the container. Authorities received a collapse report around 8 a.m.

‘Miami Fire Rescue responded after a drilling rig fell onto three vehicles near SE 12 Street and Brickell Bay Drive,’ said Miami Fire Rescue in a social media post.

The rescued workers, ages 27 and 29, were safely freed by the Technical Rescue Team. All four injured were reported in stable condition.

The rig also crushed the BMW and two parked vehicles, igniting a fire. Miami Fire Chief Robert Hevia detailed the rescue at a news conference. Crew members extinguished the blaze while freeing trapped victims.

The BMW driver’s escape from the fire was described by Hevia as ‘incredible.’

All 18 construction workers were accounted for at the dramatic scene, where rescue crews managed fire extinguishing and victim extrication simultaneously.

The area was closed between SE 12th and SE 13th Streets; motorists were advised to avoid it due to expected delays. Officers directed traffic at the scene.

The collapse’s cause is currently unknown, with OSHA starting an investigation. Incident location is cited as Ken Griffin’s Citadel headquarters construction site, according to NBC 6 South Florida.
