Construction Updates on White House Helipad and Other Projects

Construction on a new helipad at the White House resumed as workers dismantled a granite seal intended for Marine One’s landing. The Associated Press noted that crews used jackhammers to remove the seal, but the reason for its removal is unknown.

Initial helipad work followed the removal of a fighting arena from the White House’s South Lawn, which hosted the “Freedom 250 UFC” event in June for Trump’s 80th birthday. By July 13, 2026, construction was visible from the Washington Monument.

Reports from May indicated Trump planned this helipad for the VH-92A Patriot helicopter, preventing damage to the South Lawn. This helipad is meant to permanently enhance the White House grounds. Trump mentioned that Sikorsky Aircraft, responsible for the new helicopters and a Lockheed Martin subsidiary, is financing this project. He explained, “Sikorsky is covering it because they underestimated the helicopter power.”

The project involves total grass removal not due to color changes but due to turf being uprooted by helicopter exhaust. Trump stated the $6 million project is fully funded by Sikorsky. Lockheed Martin deferred project comments to the White House.

A White House spokesperson, Davis Ingle, emphasized the helipad’s necessity for safe landings and to preserve the South Lawn. As July ended, the granite helipad floor with the presidential seal was visible. However, Trump was reportedly dissatisfied with its look, directing crews for rework.

Two project insiders revealed Trump’s interest in a horizon-level landing pad, requiring further demolition for leveling the sloped lawn. It is unclear additional costs involved in these adjustments.

This helipad is part of broader projects initiated by Trump in his second term. Other notable projects include a new ballroom near the White House, replacing the East Wing, gold decoration for the Oval Office, re-paving the Rose Garden, and adding a “Presidential Walk of Fame.”
