Adolfo Daniel Vallejo faced a financial penalty at the French Open after his remarks about having a female umpire for his second-round match. The tennis player was fined $65,000, organizers revealed.
Vallejo was defeated by Moise Kouame, a young French player, in an intense five-set match lasting close to five hours. Post-match, Vallejo expressed to the tennis website Clay that matches like his require male umpires. He felt that the complexity of the game was beyond a female umpire’s capacity.
The match concluded with scores of 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6 (8) in favor of Kouame. Amelie Mauresmo, the director of Roland Garros, commented that the fine represented about half of Vallejo’s prize money from the tournament’s second round. It was later specified that the penalty was calculated in dollars.
This is clearly unacceptable. Once again, such remarks have no place here,Mauresmo stated.
Vallejo, who hails from Paraguay, criticized the umpire, Ana Carvalho of Brazil, stating that she did not manage the crowd effectively.
Vallejo defended his position by highlighting the intensity of the crowd, mainly supporting their home player Kouame. He felt a male umpire would have been better suited for handling the boisterous audience. Yet, the atmosphere he described did not derail his gameplay, he said, but rather empowered his opponent.
Vallejo also noted that Kouame delayed the game frequently by lying down or stalling. He pointed out the challenges for referees when spectators disrupt the game. The crowd was reportedly vocal for extended periods, impacting the match’s dynamics, he argued.
Vallejo’s comments and the resulting fine underline ongoing discussions about gender roles and crowd management in sports.
