During a graduation ceremony for Bard College’s affiliated high schools in New York and New Jersey, students expressed strong disapproval towards outgoing president Leon Botstein. Following his recent announcement of retirement, which came in the wake of revelations about his close relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, the event took a contentious turn.
Held at United Palace in Upper Manhattan, the ceremony witnessed students booing at nearly every mention of Botstein’s name. His advice to graduates on handling complex and dishonest people stirred further reactions. Botstein stated, “To get anything done, you’re going to have to dance with the devil.”
The students’ uproar intensified, leading Botstein to pause and advise, “The fifth piece of advice I would give is appropriate to your response: Don’t judge too quickly things in life.” Despite the loud protests, Botstein did not directly reference Epstein, and Jennifer Strodl, Bard College’s spokeswoman, affirmed this stance.
From 2012 to 2017, Botstein maintained correspondence and visits with Epstein, despite warnings of Epstein’s criminal record, including a conviction related to solicitation of a minor for prostitution. Strodl emphasized that Botstein’s comments underscored the importance of dialogue and debate in society.
Students interpreted Botstein’s remarks as allusions to his connections with Epstein, prompting their dissatisfaction.
