In New York, tensions rose as Knicks owner James Dolan and NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani clashed before a major Knicks game. This dispute began when the usual watch party outside Madison Square Garden was canceled ahead of Game 3, reportedly due to President Donald Trump’s presence.
Dolan later called off Game 4’s watch party, originally planned for 1,000 fans. He expressed his frustration, stating, “We’re about millions of people.”
In a rare interview with WFAN, Dolan criticized the mayor’s decisions. He said, “Our hope was that the mayor and the commissioner would change their minds and then we’d put the screens up.” Dolan accused city officials of curbing the Knicks celebration.
At around 5 p.m. ET, Mayor Mamdani countered on social media, stating MSG had itself requested a permit for fewer than a thousand fans. Dolan, however, canceled the event.
Approximately an hour before Game 4 started, MSG released a strong statement. They argued that the 1,000-person limit was too restrictive, leaving thousands of fans excluded. “We did not think it was fair,” the statement asserted.
The permit application from MSG, uncovered by The City Reporter, showed the venue had the option to open the event to an “unknown” number of attendees.
A city-hosted watch party at Bryant Park earlier led to disorder, a recurring issue during the Knicks Finals run.
This dispute underscores the ongoing challenges in managing large public gatherings amid safety and logistic concerns. Street closures were enforced during NBA Finals game days, illustrating the complexity of hosting such significant events in a bustling city.
