Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced significant criticism for appearing to share a light-hearted moment at the 9/11 Memorial. This incident occurred during the somber reading of names commemorating the victims of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks.
The incident was captured on a television feed that showed the reading of victims’ names. The camera transition from a grieving individual to Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani laughing sparked outrage among viewers.
Steve Guest, a former staffer for Sen. Ted Cruz, expressed strong disapproval, calling the moment “disgraceful.” Others on social media echoed this sentiment, with Meghan McCain questioning the appropriateness of the laughter.
Mamdani was already under scrutiny from 9/11 families before this incident.
Despite the criticism, Michael Ragusa, associated with former Mayor Giuliani’s team, defended the duo. Ragusa suggested the footage was taken out of context. According to him, the laughter occurred while they greeted each other amid other politicians.
The backlash did not stop there. Spencer Pratt and the Pittsburgh Republican Committee offered harsh judgments. Critiques continued with Councilwoman Inna Vernikov highlighting the pain families were enduring juxtaposed against the politicians’ laughter.
Additional dissent came from political figures like Rep. Randy Fine and Rep. Wesley Hunt. They raised questions about the appropriateness of discussing politics at Ground Zero, dubbing it sacred.
Social media personalities, such as Richard Sementa and Juanita Broaddrick, utilized sharp language to criticize Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez.
Despite the uproar, some footage showed Mamdani standing respectfully at other moments during the event. However, the criticism persisted, drawing attention to the contrast between the mourners and the politicians’ demeanor.
At present, neither Ocasio-Cortez nor Mamdani have provided comments regarding the specific interaction captured in the footage.
