Last season, Trent played in 65 games, starting in 21 of them. He averaged 8.1 points, 1.2 assists, 1.0 rebounds, and 0.5 steals per game over 21.2 minutes. His shooting percentage fell to 38.7%, marking the lowest of his career. These numbers have seen a decline over the past four years.

Contract Comparisons and Concerns

Trent’s average annual value (AAV) of $16 million places him in the same financial tier as players such as Dennis Schroder, Quentin Grimes, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Max Strus, Lu Dort, and Klay Thompson, all of whom performed better last season. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon highlighted Trent’s negative statistics, including win shares, box plus-minus, and value over replacement player (VORP), while questioning the justification of Trent receiving a mid-level exception-like contract.

“The contract stinks,” MacMahon remarked, expressing skepticism on ESPN’s “The Hoop Collective.”

Some voices in the NBA are urging the league for a formal investigation, suspecting an undisclosed agreement between Trent and the Bucks. MacMahon went so far as to suggest that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver should look into the deal.

Brian Windhorst pointed to the current NBA inquiry involving Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers, along with Aspiration, as a reason for heightened scrutiny over Trent’s contract. Allegations claim Leonard was set to receive $28 million from Aspiration, reportedly in a no-show endorsement deal.
