Controversy Surrounds Sophie Cunningham’s Stance on Transgender Participation

A mix of critics and supporters gathered at Target Center in Minnesota on Sunday during a game between the Indiana Fever and the Minnesota Lynx. The focus was on Indiana guard Sophie Cunningham’s stance on transgender participation in women’s sports.

Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve wore a shirt stating, “Trans kids belong,” as she led her team to a 108-100 victory over the Fever. In the stands, attendees wore shirts with the message, “Trans kids belong in sports.”

This was the third consecutive Fever game to draw attention after Cunningham expressed support for excluding transgender girls and women from girls’ and women’s sports in an ESPN article. Before the game, Cunningham and Reeve had a discussion at midcourt.

Reeve commented, “Both of us understand we have platforms and we talked about wanting to educate. We share common ground on some issues and differ on others. It’s important how you handle these things. Meeting in person was valuable.”

Cunningham faced boos from the crowd when she first touched the ball and throughout the game. Outside the arena, fans gathered, chanting, “Protect trans women,” and displaying signs saying, “Love is truth” and “Thank you Sophie.”

After the game, Caitlin Clark reflected on handling the dialogues, saying, “I think we’re excellent at it. Leagues and governing bodies should work with athletes to find solutions. Our focus is on basketball and improving our performance.” Asked for further thoughts, Clark simply replied she had already answered.

In Portland on Friday, Cunningham addressed concerns about rallies, saying, “Those who know me understand I’m loving and positive. Basketball and inspiring the next generation are my focus, and detractors don’t distract me or my teammates.”
