The paint is peeling from Washington’s Reflecting Pool following renovations initiated by President Donald Trump. He claims vandalism is to blame. “We’ve had problems with vandalism at the Reflecting Pool,” Trump stated on his social media site. “Three days ago, the grass outside the Pool was destroyed, and efforts have been made to damage the newly installed interior surface.” Trump provided no evidence to support his allegations.
Despite requests, authorities responsible for the maintenance of the National Mall have not commented. The recent renovations required the pool to be painted blue ahead of the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, set for June 19, 2026. Reports have surfaced of an arrest related to alleged paint peeling. This action, however, does not account for the algae formations clouding the green water or the swathes of detached blue paint.
Trump suspects foul play. He suggested chemical sabotage similar to that used previously on the National Mall. “Just like the chemicals used on the National Mall, they’ve applied similar methods in the Reflecting Pool to damage our beautiful work,” he posted on Truth Social.
The discovery of numbers “86 47” etched into the grass is under investigation. Authorities suspect a potential threat to Trump, the 47th president. Here, ’86’ may signify ‘getting rid of’.
The allegations emerged amid widespread criticism of the pool’s condition. Trump allocated over $14 million to refurbishing the pool for upcoming America 250 celebrations. An algae bloom had quickly returned the water to its previous green hue which Trump sought to replace by painting the underside “American flag blue.” Federal employees used chemicals to fight the algae; however, chunks of paint now reveal the pool’s rocky bottom.
