Criticism of Apple News for Alleged Liberal Bias

1 hour ago 0

Studies by the Media Research Center (MRC) suggest Apple News favors content from left-leaning news organizations. The MRC, which monitors conservative media, found Apple News shifted more towards liberal outlets after the transition from former CEO Tim Cook to new CEO John Ternus on September 1.

Throughout October, Apple News reportedly promoted 504 stories, with only 11 being from right-leaning outlets. According to the media bias rating site AllSides, 67.3% of the stories came from liberal outlets, while only 2% were from conservative sources.

The MRC study found that Apple News consistently featured a high percentage of left-leaning content each month since Ternus became CEO. Though there was a slight increase in conservative stories during his second month, half of these stories still portrayed the Trump administration negatively.

MRC Free Speech America spokesperson, Dan Schneider, highlighted that Apple News ran only eleven stories from right-leaning outlets in October, which were mostly negative towards Trump and Republicans in general. Schneider stated that Apple, under Ternus, seems to hope for a particular election outcome.

The MRC also assessed stories directly related to President Trump, showing all were negative. Between October 1 and October 28, Apple News featured 96 headlines including Trump’s name, out of which 49 were negative, none were positive, and 47 were neutral.

As described by MRC editor Luis Cornelio, Apple News promoted headlines calling Trump antisemitic, irrational, or a Russian sympathizer, alongside focusing on his administration’s legal issues and policy-related criticisms. Cornelio noted Apple News ignored numerous positive stories about Trump.

Accusations of liberal bias have long plagued Apple News, with earlier reports showing substantial contributions by Apple’s executives and board members to Democrats over various election cycles. MRC President David Bozell remarked that the organization’s findings reveal Apple’s editorial preferences plainly.

Apple did not provide a response to requests for comments regarding these allegations.
