Strait of Hormuz Traffic Declines

The number of vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz has dropped to a one-week low of eight, based on data shared by the Reuters news agency. Before the conflict began on February 28, around 130 ships navigated this crucial waterway daily. Recent figures are considerably below the 10-day average of about 12 vessels, marking the lowest since August 5.

Escalating Houthi Attacks in Yemen

Houthi rebels targeted a vessel in the Red Sea, resulting in the deaths of at least six individuals, according to Yemen’s coast guard. This incident is the first known fatality from Houthi attacks on shipping since renewed conflict emerged in the region. The Bab el-Mandeb strait incident happened alongside attacks on the government-held port city of Mokha, causing further casualties among troops and civilians.

The Houthi strikes signal an intensification against Yemeni government forces and oil facilities in Saudi Arabia, a supporter of Yemen’s government. Such actions threaten the 2022 truce, potentially rekindling Yemen’s civil war and opening additional conflict fronts. Houthi spokesperson Mohammed Abdul-Salam accused Saudi Arabia of using the ceasefire to enforce a blockade initiated in 2015. The Houthis state that negotiations can only proceed if this blockade is lifted.

U.S. Military Actions in the Gulf of Oman

U.S. Central Command reported firing on a Panama-flagged vessel circumventing the American blockade of Iranian ports. A U.S. Navy MH-60 helicopter launched two Hellfire missiles at the ship’s engine room after warnings were ignored. The condition of the crew is unknown. According to U.S. forces, the vessel will no longer attempt to reach Iran in defiance of the blockade.

As of Tuesday, U.S. Central Command mentioned disabling three non-compliant vessels, boarding two others, and redirecting 55 commercial ships that attempted to breach the blockade in this tense region.
