Dr. Marc Siegel has voiced concerns over the rapidly spreading cyclosporiasis outbreak, which has impacted over 4,000 people across 41 states. The infection is linked to contaminated produce, particularly leafy greens, and is not yet contained, despite ongoing FDA efforts. Dr. Siegel criticized the FDA’s suggestion to relax peptide restrictions, voicing concerns about the inadequate research on their long-term health implications.

Michigan’s Grim Toll

Two fatalities have occurred in Michigan due to the state’s extensive cyclosporiasis outbreak, according to health authorities. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) reported that 11,234 people have been infected, and 193 individuals have been hospitalized. The deceased individuals had underlying health issues possibly worsened by the infection and dehydration.

Potential Sources of Contamination

Health officials are investigating the outbreak’s origin, focusing on salad greens like lettuce as potential contributors. Although no specific grower or supplier is confirmed, the link to shredded lettuce at some Taco Bell outlets prompted the chain to promote lettuce-free options.

Understanding Cyclosporiasis

Caused by the Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite, cyclosporiasis symptoms include persistent watery diarrhea, severe cramping, bloating, and weight loss. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) note that untreated, symptoms can last for weeks or months, but the illness is not typically life-threatening in the U.S.
