Gottheimer refers to comments made by DSA members at a recent convention in Chicago. Some members advocate for actions like “removing ICE from campuses,” while others view socialism as akin to values they learned in the Christian Church.

With 150,000 registered members, the DSA presents a contrast to the 45 million registered Democrats. Despite some openness to DSA-aligned candidates within the party, Gottheimer rejects these activists’ participation.

Fringe Coalitions and Insurgencies

Gottheimer points out that fringe coalitions are attempting to invade both major parties with incompatible ideas. He references James Carville, a longtime Clinton confidant, who criticized left-wing streamer Hasan Piker. Carville stated he would disown the party if figures like Piker were allowed to take leadership roles.

Potential Party Switches

While Gottheimer remains with the Democratic Party, others have switched parties. Rep. Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey shifted to the Republican Party during Trump’s first term. This move drew criticism from local Democratic committees.

Gottheimer’s district is notably diverse, encompassing both liberal suburbs near New York City and conservative areas near the Delaware Water Gap. This makes it one of the most politically varied districts in the state.
