Deshaun Watson’s Noteworthy Return to NFL Action

Deshaun Watson marked a significant moment on Saturday during a preseason game against the Chicago Bears. It was his first NFL appearance since 2024. Watson’s performance was a success, particularly because he outran competitors Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel in the quest for the Browns’ starting quarterback role.

Watson didn’t display exceptional skills during his half of play. Yet, by being better than the other two quarterbacks, he stood out. This performance offered a glimpse into a compelling quarterback battle within the Browns’ lineup.

Watson expressed satisfaction by saying, “Definitely a good moment for myself,” which highlighted his return to the field after sustaining two Achilles tears between October 2024 and early 2025. Watson managed to leave the game without injury, marking a victory for the commonly injured player.

Though Watson’s performance wasn’t extraordinary, he seemed impressive in comparison to Sanders and Gabriel. The Browns are currently evaluating the quarterback options for the starting position, with head coach Todd Monken praising Watson’s dedication.

Monken commented, “I mean, it was so cool to watch him play. I get all of the frustration by fans, himself, but for him to come back and work like he did is an unbelievable credit to him.” Watson completed 11 out of 15 passes, and while the Browns scored during his game time, Watson did not throw a touchdown and he fumbled once.

The fumble shifted Watson’s momentum, as he completed 10 of his initial 11 passes, only to see his subsequent focus dwindle. Prior to the turnover, Watson showcased accuracy, only missing one pass due to a drop by tight end Harold Fannin.

Watson reflected on his journey back, acknowledging his efforts, “I don’t think that’s anything that I doubted myself. That’s the reason why I’ve worked hard these last two years, you know, to get back to that.” His return to the Browns doesn’t match the standards of his $230 million agreement with the team, but he remains optimistic about his capabilities.

Both Sanders and Gabriel struggled during their performances. Sanders threw interceptions and fumbled a snap, although he didn’t lose possession. His passer rating stood at 39.6. Gabriel had a passer rating of 27.1, indicating difficulties even against backup players.

Next week, Sanders will start against the Buffalo Bills, playing the first half. Watson will participate in the third quarter with Gabriel finishing the fourth. The competition for the starting quarterback position remains open, allowing each player further opportunity to prove their potential.
