Multiple Trapped in Mall After Earthquake

Several individuals remain trapped in a mall after a strong earthquake struck southern Japan. Local fire officials report the AEON Mall suffered partial destruction. Reports indicate an explosion occurred on the second floor. The state broadcaster, NHK, has shown images of nearly a dozen fire trucks gathered in the mall’s parking area. Other images reveal collapsed ceilings and facade, as well as debris-strewn roads.

Early Quake Disruption Images

Following the 7.1-magnitude earthquake, passengers fill JR Hakata Station in Fukuoka due to suspended bullet train services. In Kumamoto Prefecture, shelves and office equipment have fallen. The exterior wall of a store collapsed in Kumamoto City.

Damage and Rescue Efforts

State broadcaster NHK reports at least 12 collapsed buildings, including four where people are still trapped. Most incidents are located in Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Aerial footage shows a mall with a collapsed ceiling and exposed internal structures. Additionally, shrine pillars and buildings have collapsed, with fire engulfing at least one location. The region recorded at least seven fires.

Details of the Earthquake

A powerful earthquake hit southern Japan on Tuesday, causing a train derailment and multiple injuries. The Japan Meteorological Agency announced the quake with a magnitude of 7.1 at a depth of 10 kilometers. A tsunami warning was briefly issued for the Ariake and Yatsushiro Seas. The warning was later withdrawn, reported by NHK.

Japan’s Earthquake-Prone Nature

Japan is prone to both minor and major tremors daily, due to its position on the ‘Ring of Fire,’ where tectonic plates meet. This area accounts for many of the world’s earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. About 20% of global earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.0 or higher happen in Japan. Since the 2011 disaster involving the Fukushima nuclear plant, Japan has enhanced its earthquake alert systems and evacuation procedures.
