Details Emerge on Trump’s Response During WHCA Dinner Incident

Karoline Leavitt, a former White House press secretary, disclosed new insights into President Donald Trump’s reaction during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in April, following an incident involving shots fired. Leavitt described Trump’s demeanor in a new episode of ‘Hang Out with Sean Hannity.’ Despite narrowly escaping an alleged assassination attempt, Trump remained determined to return to the ballroom.

‘He was like a caged lion backstage, eager to go back out there,’ Leavitt recalled. ‘I was hesitant, unsure about returning myself.’

The dinner took place at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, DC, on July 24, 2026, after being postponed and relocated from its original April 25 slot at the Washington Hilton. Initial chaos erupted when a gunman identified as Cole Allen from Torrance, California, allegedly breached security at the Hilton, armed with weapons.

Secret Service agents swiftly evacuated Trump and Vice President JD Vance from the ballroom. Allen, who targeted Trump administration officials, excluding FBI Director Kash Patel, was quickly captured by the Secret Service.

Amid the ensuing disorder, Leavitt noted Trump’s eagerness to return and his willingness to wait for the event to continue. Armed Secret Service agents were visible on stage as the gala’s atmosphere shifted from celebration to chaos.

‘[Trump] was persistent, challenging his security detail with questions about returning and showing readiness to stay all night if needed,’ Leavitt said.

Efforts to resume the dinner began as Trump expressed a desire to address the public in the briefing room shortly after the incident. ‘He wanted to make a statement, and he did,’ Leavitt explained.

Later, Trump held a press conference at the White House, accompanied by top administration members, outlining the shooting’s details.

The president renewed advocacy for constructing a ballroom at the White House, aiming to provide a secure venue for official events. Despite the incidents in April, Trump attended the rescheduled WHCA Dinner in July.
