DHS Urges Continued Detainment of Illegal Immigrant Accused of Murder

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has stated that Valmir Djempsley, an illegal immigrant from Haiti accused of murdering his coworker, should remain in custody and not be released. The incident occurred during an argument at a Michigan food processing plant, resulting in the death of 21-year-old Brandon Eduardo Velasquez Chavez.

Djempsley, 20, is charged with stabbing Chavez on June 30 at the Clemens Food Group plant in Coldwater. Reports indicate that the argument escalated, leading to Djempsley allegedly chasing and stabbing Chavez. Djempsley claims Chavez headbutted him during the confrontation.

Authorities intervened quickly, but Chavez died at the scene despite efforts to save him. Prosecutors mentioned that Djempsley was on a work visa at the time.

DHS revealed that Djempsley entered the U.S. illegally through Texas in 2024 and was later released by the current administration. He faces murder charges and maintains a plea of not guilty. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has requested a detainer, asking local authorities not to release Djempsley without notifying them.

Acting DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis criticized the open border policies, stating, “This illegal alien barbarically stabbed his coworker to death.” She emphasized the tragic consequences of such policies, blaming them for the presence of the accused in the country.

According to court documents, the dispute arose over Chavez using one of Djempsley’s knives. Djempsley remains held without bond in the Branch County jail.

A prosecutor stated, “The defendant was a guest in our country at the time of this crime. He should have behaved responsibly but instead committed a grave violation against another human being.”
