Florida’s Progressive and Historic Moves
As the primary season reaches its conclusion, Democratic voters in Florida have chosen a progressive Senate candidate. Meanwhile, Republican Rep. Byron Donalds, favored by President Donald Trump, secured the nomination to become Florida’s first Black governor.
The state saw mixed outcomes for incumbents amid Republican-led redistricting that disrupted congressional maps. Voters in Alaska, Wyoming, and California also made critical decisions, sometimes dealing with candidates sharing last names.
These elections influence the upcoming midterms, where control of Congress is tightly contested with Republicans holding a slight advantage.
Historic Black Candidacies
Donalds will contest to replace term-limited Gov. Ron DeSantis and joins a historic pool of Black candidates for governor. Other notable nominees include Rep. John James in Michigan and Lisa Demuth in Minnesota. On the Democratic side, David Crowley emerged in a close primary in Wisconsin, alongside Attorney General Aaron Ford in Nevada.
Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia is also in the race, with a potential to become the first Black woman governor. Currently, Wes Moore of Maryland is the nation’s only Black governor, seeking re-election.
Florida Congressional Race Outcomes
Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz won a tricky race in Florida’s altered congressional district, overcoming Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who resigned earlier this year. Schultz, vying for her 12th term, faced criticism and accusations of betrayal from rivals.
Republican Incumbent Upset and Scandalous Candidates
While Donalds triumphed, Trump’s endorsed candidate, Catalina Lauf, lost to Jim Schwartzel in a race marked by unusual candidates. Some had past ties to prison or scandal, like former Rep. Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina and former Rep. Chris Collins of New York.
Progressive Angie Nixon outpaced establishment candidate Alex Vindman, former National Security Council official, in Florida. Elsewhere, Rep. Jared Moskowitz, a Democrat, won over Oliver Larkin in a Republican-leaning district.
Republican Cory Mills lost his bid for a third term to Ryan Elijah due to scandals, including domestic violence allegations and lack of party support.
Alaska’s Closely Watched Senate Race
In Alaska, incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan faces another candidate with the same name, accused of being an instrument to confuse voters. Dan J. Sullivan Jr., a retired teacher, dismissed the charges.
Mary Peltola, a former U.S. Representative and first Alaska Native in Congress, aims for the Senate, bringing another significant possibility for diversity in leadership.
Trump’s Mixed Results in Governor Races
While Trump-backed Donalds succeeded in Florida, his endorsed candidate in Wyoming, Megan Degenfelder, lost to Eric Barlow. Trump’s gubernatorial endorsements have met with varying outcomes in different states.
California’s Open Primary and Special Interests
In California, voters selected candidates to replace Rep. Eric Swalwell, with significant spending from pro-Israel lobby groups influencing the race. State Sen. Aisha Wahab and Melissa Hernandez advanced while outside financial influences continued to play a role as seen in other contests.
