Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Gains Support in Alabama

Dolly Parton’s dedication to childhood literacy is gaining momentum in Alabama. Following her passing at age 80, residents are rallying behind a specialty license plate supporting her Imagination Library. The program, founded in 1995, distributes free books monthly to children from birth to age 5.

Surge in License Plate Support

Kaelyn Christian, Alabama state director for the Imagination Library, reports a significant increase in interest. Initially, the license plate had about 40 pre-commitments. By Wednesday afternoon, commitments exceeded 550, surpassing half the required 1,000 for production.

Christian shared, “It’s exploded over the last 24 hours.” She expressed confidence in meeting the target, which seemed uncertain just a week prior.

Program’s Financial Impact

Drivers purchasing the plate contribute approximately $50 annually to local library programs. This fee creates ongoing support, functioning like a recurring donation. Each plate can fund book distribution to two children for nearly two years.

Dolly Parton initiated the Imagination Library in memory of her father, who lacked the chance to learn reading or writing. The program provides up to 60 books to enrolled children until they turn 5.

Growing Enrollment and Reach

To date, the Imagination Library has delivered over 300 million books globally. In Alabama, around 114,000 children are currently enrolled. Christian noted a recent surge in registrations. She mentioned her own nearly 5-year-old son’s excitement about receiving new books monthly.

A mother she spoke with pre-committed to a plate after her children graduated from the program. This highlights the impact of the library on families who might otherwise struggle to afford books.

“We couldn’t afford books for our home, and now my middle school child reads 200 books a year,” relayed one parent.

Long-term Community Support

The specialty plate provides more than nostalgia. It offers financial assurance to local partners helping run the program. These partners focus on enrolling children, community outreach, and fundraising.

Christian highlighted their role as “boots on the ground,” emphasizing the plate’s importance in sustaining the program.

In 2023, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey announced statewide coverage of the Imagination Library. By early 2025, all 67 Alabama counties were served, with the state underwriting half the cost for participants.
