Dolly Parton’s Stance on Politics: A Look Back

52 minutes ago 0

Dolly Parton, renowned for her music about love, heartbreak, and faith, consistently avoided the realm of partisan politics. In a 2020 interview with USA Today, Parton expressed her desire to remain non-political.

“I am not political, and I refuse to get caught up in political things,” she stated. Her stance persisted through multiple presidential elections despite questions regarding President Donald Trump and the honors extended to her.

“I don’t like to get involved in politics, because first of all, I have as many Republican fans as I do Democrats,” Parton told USA Today. “I don’t want to offend anybody, I have a right to myself.”

Despite offers of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Parton declined due to personal reasons and the COVID-19 pandemic, as explained to NBC’s “Today”. Parton’s humor about her political neutrality was evident when she joked about her parental influences, stating, “My daddy was a Republican, my mama was a Democrat, and I’m a hypocrite!”

In her music career, decisions like collaborating with Kid Rock for her 2023 album “Rockstar” reflected her philosophy of acceptance. She highlighted the importance of separating admiration from agreement, reinforcing that respect doesn’t equate to endorsement of all actions.

Parton’s Christian faith steered her belief in forgiveness. “I ask God every day to let Him shine through me,” she shared. Her reluctance to endorse candidates was clarified during the 2016 presidential campaign after a misunderstanding meant her comments about Hillary Clinton were perceived as support.

Reflecting on politics, Parton was candid about her unsuitability for political office. “I don’t think anybody could actually do a great job at that,” she commented to Metro in 2023.

Dolly Parton passed away following a brief battle with cancer. In line with her wishes, a private service will be held, with her family requesting donations to her Imagination Library.
