San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw has been suspended for one game by the NFL. This follows an incident where Greenlaw headbutted Seattle Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones. The altercation, which occurred during Sunday’s game, resulted in Jones needing a towel to stop blood from the headbutt.
In addition to the headbutt, Greenlaw was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct after hitting Sam Darnold out of bounds. This occurred along the Seahawks’ sideline and led to a confrontation with several players. Greenlaw’s suspension is without pay and he will be eligible to return to active play on October 20, after the 49ers’ game against the Washington Commanders on October 19.
Greenlaw might appeal the suspension. If he chooses to do so, the hearing would be overseen by one of the NFL’s designated officers such as Derrick Brooks or Ron Rivera. All these officers are former NFL players.
“OutKick reported that a fine or suspension was likely for Greenlaw following the Sunday incident.”
This is not Greenlaw’s first disciplinary issue. He has a history of altercations and fines. Notably, after a game against the New York Giants in 2025, he was suspended for verbally threatening a referee. These incidents have led many to view Greenlaw as an emotional player prone to confrontation.
In another case from 2023, Greenlaw was ejected after an altercation with Philadelphia Eagles’ security personnel. He also received a fine last week for taunting the Broncos and their head coach, Sean Payton.
The 49ers organization has dealt with multiple suspensions this season. Team owner Jed York is currently serving a suspension related to conduct violations.
