Explosion of Drone Near Bulgarian Gas Pipeline

A drone carrying explosives penetrated Bulgarian airspace from Romania and detonated near an international gas pipeline early on Saturday. The blast prompted increased border security measures between the two neighboring NATO countries. Prime Minister Rumen Radev reported that the drone exploded shortly after 5 a.m., approximately 330 feet within Bulgarian territory.

The explosion site was a sunflower field near Kardam village, some 200 meters from a Romanian compressor station and 1 kilometer from Bulgaria’s station on the Trans-Balkan pipeline. Authorities confirmed there were no casualties or infrastructure damage, but the area was secured for investigation purposes.

Initial Investigations and Speculations

The origin of the drone and its potential links to Russia or Ukraine were initially uncertain. Bulgaria’s Defense Ministry later identified the wreckage as likely belonging to a Maya decoy drone, which is commonly used by the Ukrainian military. The ministry stated there was no immediate evidence suggesting the incident was deliberate.

Both Romania and Bulgaria failed to detect or track the drone prior to the explosion. Romania’s Defense Ministry confirmed its radar systems did not identify any aerial threats crossing into Bulgaria. Prime Minister Radev announced plans to bolster surveillance by relocating anti-drone detection and response equipment from the Bulgarian-Turkish border to the Romanian border.

Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov mentioned that the blast’s size and black smoke suggested a large payload of explosives. He noted the difficulty in detecting such drones due to their small size and low-altitude flight paths. Stoyanov stated Bulgaria intends to discuss the incident at an upcoming NATO North Atlantic Council meeting.

Importance of the Trans-Balkan Pipeline

The Trans-Balkan pipeline plays a critical role in connecting Turkey’s and Ukraine’s gas supplies through Bulgaria, Romania, and Moldova. Its ability to transport gas in both directions makes it a strategic supply route for Ukraine and Eastern Europe. The explosion near the Negru Vodă-Kardam connection, which links the Bulgarian and Romanian gas systems, did not damage the pipeline or other infrastructure.

The route gains strategic importance as it aids in diversifying regional energy supplies and providing Ukraine with gas from southern Europe, including liquefied natural gas brought via Greece. Gas network operators from Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine have offered capacities along the pipeline for northbound deliveries to Ukraine, as per Transgaz, the Romanian gas transmission operator.

Overnight Strikes in Ukraine by Russia

In a separate development, Russia launched six ballistic missiles and over 150 drones at Ukraine overnight. The attack resulted in four deaths in Kyiv and its surrounding areas, according to Ukrainian officials. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 135 drones, although ballistic missiles managed to breach Ukraine’s defense systems.

Among the victims were a 3-year-old boy and his grandparents in the Brovary district near Kyiv, President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed. One more casualty was reported in the capital. Concerns about the shortage of Patriot interceptor missiles resurfaced, as Ukraine heavily depends on them to counter Russian ballistic threats. Zelensky appealed for increased international assistance and strict sanctions against Moscow, seeking approval and aid to produce more interceptors within Ukraine.

Additionally, Ukraine conducted long-range drone strikes targeting oil refineries in Russia’s Krasnodar and Samara regions. Ukrainian authorities claim these attacks aim to disrupt Russia’s energy sector, which supports Moscow’s military capabilities.
