Sendai Nuclear Plant Unaffected by Earthquake

Japan’s nuclear regulatory body informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that the Sendai Nuclear Power Plant remained undamaged following the recent earthquake. The IAEA announced its continued monitoring of developments through a statement on X. The scrutiny on nuclear facilities has intensified since the 2011 disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, which was caused by a 9.1-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami.

Disaster Relief Efforts Initiated

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced the dispatch of 300 members from the Japan Self-Defense Forces to southern Japan to aid in disaster relief activities.

People Trapped in AEON Mall

Several individuals are reportedly trapped in a mall after the earthquake struck southern Japan. Local firefighters reported an explosion on the second floor of the AEON Mall, as nearly a dozen fire trucks responded to the incident. Footage from NHK showcased the mall’s damaged ceiling, facade, and surrounding debris-filled roads.

Disruptions and Damage Documented

Early images illustrate the aftermath of the 7.1-magnitude earthquake in southwestern Japan. Train services were suspended, crowding JR Hakata Station in Fukuoka. Images show fallen shelves and office equipment in Kumamoto Prefecture, and the collapse of a store’s exterior wall in Kumamoto City.

Building Collapse and Fires in Kumamoto Prefecture

At least 12 buildings collapsed as reported by NHK, including several incidents where individuals remain trapped. The majority of these were in Yatsushiro City. Aerial footage revealed substantial damage at a commercial facility in Kumamoto Prefecture, including a collapsed ceiling and visible internal structures. Seven fires were documented in the area, as the broadcaster reported.

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.1, struck southern Japan on Tuesday afternoon, causing substantial damage and injuries. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory for the Ariake and Yatsushiro Seas shortly after, which was later lifted. The earthquake’s depth was measured at 10 kilometers (over 6 miles).
