Emerging Talent: Kaneland’s Brody Guthrie Shines as Starting Quarterback

In sports, sometimes a change in strategy produces great results. This seems to be the case for Kaneland quarterback Brody Guthrie. Now a junior, Guthrie ascended to the varsity team last season as a sophomore to serve as a backup. Although this decision raised questions for Knights coach Mike Thorgesen, it seems to be paying off. Thorgesen noted that bringing Guthrie up early was atypical since typically they promote players who will actively play. With ample JV games available, Guthrie gained experience playing behind Jalen Carter, honing his skills for future success.

While it is early in the season, Guthrie’s performance in Kaneland’s 49-7 triumph over Rock Island suggests positive outcomes. Guthrie, at 6-foot-3 and 192 pounds, delivered an impressive varsity start, completing nine of eleven passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Colten Van Dyke received three passes for 73 yards and two touchdowns, while Cooper Stombres added a 19-yard touchdown from two catches.

“I felt amazing about it,” Guthrie remarked on being promoted and gaining valuable field time, especially during moments such as the prolonged action in the Morris game when Carter was injured.

Now a freshman defensive back at Northern Illinois, Carter significantly impacted Guthrie’s development. “He took me under his wing,” Guthrie said, highlighting Carter’s mentorship during 7-on-7s and practices which proved invaluable for learning.

Interestingly, Guthrie was not initially a quarterback. He started his football journey playing safety and receiver, switching to offensive line in middle school. A growth spurt inspired Guthrie to rethink his position, pivoting to quarterback in eighth grade. His aptitude was clear when he threw a 45-yard touchdown on his first play. “It really made me love this sport,” he shared.

Guthrie, residing in unincorporated Elburn with his family, immerses himself in football while also engaging in basketball and track. Private lessons with former NFL quarterback Mike Hohensee and participation in a 7-on-7 team reflect his commitment. “The Breakfast Club” sessions, held early on Sundays, enhance his bond with teammates.

Coach Thorgesen appreciates Guthrie’s dedication, noting his persistent efforts to improve. Guthrie’s teammates elected him a team captain, and Kaneland’s experienced defense supports the developing offense, striving to replace last year’s skill-position starters. “We have skill at every position and determined players,” Guthrie expressed, confident in the team’s potential for success this season.
