PORTLAND, Ore.— Tally and Jerry Leonard first glided across the Lloyd Center ice rink back in 1967. Over the decades, their love for skating and for each other never wavered. For nearly 60 years, the rink was a cherished part of their lives. However, on Saturday, the rink saw its last skaters as the mall shut its doors.
Throngs of people gathered in the now almost empty mall to bid farewell to a local landmark. This closure marked the end of not one, but two beloved city institutions. The rink, nestled inside a shopping mall that had been a community hub, will be missed by many.
An emotional day for many, this closure symbolizes the end of a significant chapter in the city’s history. Longtime visitors and first-time guests shared the ice one last time, reminiscing about the memories they created there.
