Sean Davis, CEO and co-founder of The Federalist, and comedian Joe Machi are calling for daylight saving time to become permanent. Davis humorously dismisses mornings and emphasizes how afternoon sunlight benefits the majority. Machi adds that evening light can improve safety and enjoyment for children returning home from after-school activities.
A recent study highlights the benefits of spending more time in bright daylight. Researchers at the University of Manchester found that individuals exposed to brighter and consistent daytime light tend to sleep earlier, wake earlier, and enjoy deeper sleep at night. This study, published in NPJ Biological Timing and Sleep, collected over 500 days of data from 89 adults using light sensors and sleep trackers.
The research suggests that exposure to bright daylight helps regulate sleep patterns. Jennifer Martin, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist and professor at Florida International University, states that light impacts sleep through eye pathways, signaling daytime activity to the brain. She recommends maximizing exposure to morning light, which assists in developing a solid sleep routine.
Reducing bright light exposure in the evening can also enhance sleep quality. Martin advises avoiding bright light a few hours before bedtime and maintaining a consistent wake-up time. Adults should aim to sleep at least seven hours each night and seek help from a sleep specialist for persistent sleep problems.
Despite the findings, the researchers acknowledge that their study has limitations. The results show a correlation between daylight exposure and sleep patterns, but not causation. Light exposure was measured via wrist-worn devices instead of at the eyes, and other factors like physical activity or meal timing were not considered.
