European Parliament Moves Toward Stricter Migration Policy

The European Parliament recently witnessed a heated exchange as members voted in favor of overhauling the EU’s migrant return system. This decision marks a significant shift towards stricter immigration enforcement, reflecting growing voter discontent.

On Wednesday, lawmakers approved the Return Regulation by a vote of 418 to 218, with 30 abstentions. This regulation aims to expedite the removal process of individuals staying illegally within the EU. Following the announcement, right-wing members chanted “send them back,” contrasting sharply with left-wing members who retorted with “shame on you.”

The legislation awaits final approval from the Council of the European Union and must be published in the Official Journal before enactment. The debate highlights the division in Europe over migration issues, even as EU institutions pursue policies once deemed controversial.

The proposed rules allow for the detention of certain migrants for up to 24 months, extendable by six months, and propose “return hubs” outside the EU in willing third countries. Supporters argue these measures are essential, noting that only about 20% of those issued return decisions are deported, according to the European Commission.

The vote aligns with a report from early June indicating the EU’s move towards tougher regulations on border control and asylum. New measures include enhanced identity checks and biometric data use.

Conservative leaders hailed the vote as a triumph. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni labeled the legislation a “great success,” while right-wing figures in France and Austria acknowledged the shift in EU policy.

Critics, however, believe the legislation undermines migrant rights. The session’s atmosphere drew criticism from figures like Javi López and Ilaria Salis, while human rights advocates warn of potential adverse effects, such as increased detention and weakened protections against forced returns.
