Dr. Joel Zivot, an anesthesiologist, joined Bill Hemmer to discuss issues surrounding lethal injections after a judge in Tennessee ordered the preservation of evidence from the failed execution of Christa Pike. Pike remains on death row despite surviving a lethal injection attempt.
In another case, William Reaves, a 77-year-old Florida inmate, was executed for the murder of sheriff’s deputy Richard Raczkoski in 1986. Reaves was pronounced dead at 6:12 p.m. at Florida State Prison following a three-drug injection. He was convicted of first-degree murder in the shooting death of Raczkoski, which occurred during a confrontation at a Vero Beach convenience store.
Marc Raczkoski, the victim’s brother, and Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers witnessed the execution. While Marc expressed that justice was served, Flowers called the execution a form of closure rather than justice. Sheriff Flowers questioned whether such a peaceful death could be considered true justice.
William Reaves’s legal journey was complicated. Initially convicted and sentenced to death, his conviction was overturned due to a conflict of interest with the prosecutor. However, after a second trial, his conviction and death sentence were reinstated. His subsequent appeals failed, and the U.S. Supreme Court did not grant a stay of execution.
Reaves’s attorneys challenged the use of Florida’s three-drug lethal injection protocol, which consists of a sedative, a paralytic, and a heart-stopping drug. Despite these appeals, the state supreme court upheld the protocol. The legal arguments also emphasized that the jury was unaware of Reaves’s 100% disability rating for post-traumatic stress disorder from his military service.
A letter, signed by over 100 military veterans, appealed to Governor Ron DeSantis to halt the execution based on these factors. Despite this, Reaves was the eighth Florida prisoner over 70 executed this year. Florida has witnessed an accelerated pace of executions under Governor DeSantis, with a state record of 19 executions last year.
The trend of executions in Florida includes the rare event of two executions in a single day, last seen in July. Florida accounts for more than half of the executions in the U.S. so far this year, reflecting DeSantis’s stance on ensuring justice for victims’ families who have waited years for sentences to be carried out.
