Ohio Gubernatorial Race: Ramaswamy Faces Backlash and Poll Challenges

51 minutes ago 0

Vivek Ramaswamy, the Ohio Republican gubernatorial candidate, encountered a significant setback on prediction markets following a viral video involving Amy Acton’s mother. Kalshi, a prediction market site, reported Acton having a 76 percent chance of winning the governorship as of Tuesday. Meanwhile, Ramaswamy’s odds dropped to 26.8 percent and further to 22 percent by late afternoon. Polymarket also showed similar declines, with Ramaswamy’s odds plummeting to 30 percent and then dipping further.

The controversy stemmed from a video shared on social media by journalist Walter Curt. In this video, Donna Arthur, Acton’s mother, accused her daughter of dishonesty, stating, “Amy has a serious problem; she is a liar.” This clip has amassed over 5 million views. Acton’s childhood was reportedly unstable, characterized by frequent moves, and she was removed from her mother’s care at age 12.

Ramaswamy acknowledged the ad’s connection to his campaign, expressing a desire for the election focus to shift toward substantive issues affecting Ohioans. Despite backlash, he maintained Acton was avoiding debates and substantive discussions.

Philip Stearns, representing Acton’s campaign, criticized Ramaswamy for exploiting personal family matters for political gain. He condemned the video as a personal attack.

Reactions poured in as many criticized the ad. Conservative commentator Meghan McCain labeled it “dastardly.” Ohio Department of Development director Lydia Mihalik emphasized that political discourse should not compromise decency. Failed Florida gubernatorial candidate James Fishback declared Acton the prospective governor, while Sherrod Brown called for the ad’s condemnation.

Conversely, some, like conservative influencer Laura Loomer, supported Ramaswamy, accusing news outlets of misinformation regarding polling results.

Recent polling presents a mixed outlook. Despite prediction market declines, an ActiVote poll showed Ramaswamy slightly ahead with 51.4 percent against Acton’s 48.6 percent. However, a Marist poll showed Acton leading with 50 percent over Ramaswamy’s 43 percent. A Bowling Green State University survey positioned Acton again at 50 percent, with Ramaswamy at 44 percent.
