Explosion at Mexican Festival Causes Fatalities and Injuries

In Temascalcingo, a town in central Mexico, a pyrotechnic explosion resulted in the death of at least 10 individuals and injured 64 others. The incident occurred during a festival honoring a patron saint, near the Nuestra Señora de la Luz church. The town, located approximately 160 kilometers northwest of Mexico City, is home to around 66,000 residents.

Hundreds of attendees were anticipating a fireworks display as part of the religious celebration when the explosion took place on Saturday night. The event caused a wall to collapse, contributing to the casualty count.

The specific cause of the explosion remains undetermined. The Mexico State Attorney General’s Office has initiated an investigation to uncover further details. Among the injured are two local priests, as confirmed by a regional bishop. After the explosion, a social media video revealed people navigating through smoke and debris, searching for survivors.

Pyrotechnic-related explosions are not uncommon in Mexico. Fireworks frequently feature in street and religious celebrations. Almost four years prior, a significant fireworks explosion in Huejutla, located in the central state of Hidalgo, resulted in 17 injuries.
