The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating a series of incidents involving drones and fireworks posing threats to aircraft near major airports. These events highlight ongoing safety challenges and have prompted increased scrutiny.
Drones Near JFK Airport
Fox Business Host Cheryl Casone has raised concerns regarding the rising danger posed by drones in the vicinity of airports. A JetBlue flight experienced a drone strike near JFK Airport, while a helicopter reported a near-miss with a large toy aircraft. Casone emphasized that drones are difficult to track due to the absence of transponders. The FAA has initiated a public safety campaign addressing these issues and receives approximately 100 complaints each month. Interference with aircraft by drones can result in fines reaching $100,000.
Delta Flight Hit by Fireworks
On the Fourth of July, Delta Air Lines Flight 1076 encountered a fireworks mortar strike as it descended into Chicago Midway International Airport. The Airbus A319, carrying 52 passengers and six crew members, landed safely without reports of injuries. The flight departed from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and landed at Midway without declaring an emergency. Mechanics conducted an inspection and found no damage to the aircraft.
The Chicago police reported minor paint damage, leading to additional inspections for potential further damage. However, Delta clarified that no damage was observed during their assessment.
Ongoing Investigations and Cooperation
The FAA stated it would investigate the fireworks incident. The origin of the fireworks is unclear, and authorities have not identified any responsible parties. Delta has assured full cooperation with the FAA and other agencies in reviewing the incident.
