American eating habits are gravitating toward high-protein choices, leading fast-food chains to transform traditional morning meals to satisfy increasing consumer demand for functional nutrition. But what is the optimal strategy?
Nutrition experts highlight that consuming protein at breakfast can stabilize blood sugar levels, reduce mid-morning cravings, and support muscle health.
Advice from nutritionists indicates that protein-rich breakfasts are crucial for weight management and appetite control compared to carbohydrate-heavy options.
Tanya Freirich, a registered dietitian nutritionist from Charlotte, North Carolina, emphasized the importance of morning nutrition. “The best time to eat protein is consistently throughout the day,” Freirich told Fox News Digital. “Protein in meals helps stabilize your blood sugar after eating, and protein is important for muscle maintenance, repair, and growth.”
Nutritionists recommend that indulgent drive-thru options be treated as occasional treats. Consumers should balance high-fat morning meals with fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, and whole grains throughout the day.
Freirich suggests eating within one to two hours of waking. “Including protein in a moderately sized breakfast can help you feel satisfied, energetic, and focused during your morning hours,” she noted.
These dietary changes have led restaurant brands to innovate, reimagining classic meals.
Chick-fil-A is tapping into this trend by utilizing the Southern tradition of chicken and waffles, transforming it into a high-protein breakfast format.
“We know that many of our guests are looking to start their day with meals that are higher in protein, but that shouldn’t mean sacrificing flavor,” Allison Duncan, director of menu & packaging at Chick-fil-A, told Fox News Digital.
American breakfast habits are increasingly shifting toward high-protein options as consumers seek morning meals that provide sustained energy and satiety.
“Whether enjoyed with the classic filet and bacon or customized with an egg or sausage, the new Chicken & Waffles Breakfast Sandwich offers an unexpected way for guests to prioritize protein in their morning routine,” Duncan added.
In recent years, industry competitors have broadened their morning menus to include egg bites, Greek yogurt parfaits, and customizable meat options, catering to diners’ demand for higher protein counts.
However, health professionals emphasize that the quality and source of breakfast protein are equally important as the quantity.
“There is a big difference between types of protein sources,” Freirich explained. “While an omelet with vegetables and a chicken, waffle, bacon, and egg sandwich may contain the same grams of protein, the latter will be much higher in saturated fat and calories.”
She cautioned that processed fast-food proteins may result in a heavy feeling rather than an energy boost.
“The more processed and high-fat proteins are less healthy for our heart due to their fat and sodium content and will take longer to digest as fat slows down our digestion,” Freirich said. “A fast-food meal with processed proteins like fried chicken, egg, and bacon may leave you feeling overfull and lethargic.”
Freirich advises moderation rather than strict elimination for fast-food lovers.
“If you love chicken and waffles, perhaps that’s something that you consume once in a while rather than every day,” Freirich said. “Even the healthiest diets include treats or once-in-a-while foods in moderation.”
She recommended balancing an indulgent drive-thru breakfast with nutritious choices throughout the day.
“If you are really in the mood for a chicken and waffles morning, you can balance the rest of your day with lots of vegetables, fruits, and fiber at lunch and dinner,” Freirich noted.
Adding more protein may be beneficial for some, but a well-rounded diet should also include sufficient vegetables, fruits, beans, and whole grains.
