Florence Meiler, at 91, is a remarkable athlete with numerous world records in track and field events. She excels in sports like the 2,000-meter steeplechase, 80-meter hurdles, pole vault, high jump, triple jump, and pentathlon, according to World Masters Athletics.
Starting an Impressive Journey
Three decades ago, at 60, Meiler began her athletic journey when her best friend recruited her. Together with her friend, Barbara Jordan, they broke records and inspired many. Unfortunately, their partnership ended when Jordan was diagnosed with cancer, leading to her passing in 2020 at 85.
Continuing the Legacy
Despite the loss, Meiler continues to honor her friend’s memory by achieving new heights in athletics. She often reflects on their training sessions and the motivation they provided each other. Meiler’s commitment to her sport has led her to achieve world records in her age group of 90-94 years.
“I miss her so much,” Meiler said about her late friend Barbara Jordan.
An Inspirational Figure
In a video profile for the Olympic Channel’s Body+ series, Meiler shared the significance of her friendship with Jordan. Training together was about pushing boundaries and offering mutual support. Now, she channels this spirit in her solo practice sessions, keeping Jordan in her thoughts.
Her achievements serve as an inspiration to athletes of all ages. Meiler holds records in the 2,000-meter steeplechase (20:54.78), 80-meter hurdles (34.55), pole vault (1.30), high jump (0.92), triple jump (4.55), and pentathlon (2218).
Meiler frequently shares her mantra, “Never too late,” during motivational speeches. This phrase encourages others to embrace new challenges, proving age is no barrier to success.
