Florida Pets Rescued from Hoarding Conditions

Bodycam footage reveals the rescue of more than 100 animals from a Florida home under ‘deplorable’ conditions. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office responded to what has been described as the ‘worst animal hoarding case’ encountered by the department.

Gail Giustino, a 77-year-old postal worker, was arrested on July 20 after authorities discovered over 100 animals living in cages filled with feces at her home in Stuart, Florida. She had been ‘collecting cats’ during her mail route, informed Sheriff John Budensiek. Giustino faces charges of animal cruelty and confinement of animals without sufficient exercise.

On the day of the rescue, temperatures inside the home reached near 110 degrees, lacking air conditioning and ventilation. The sheriff’s team initially anticipated finding 15 to 30 cats. However, they were met with dozens of cats and small dogs, along with severe hygiene conditions.

The Humane Society of Treasure Coast reported that some cats had hardened feces immobilizing them until they could be freed. Spokeswoman Sarah Fisher described the severe conditions, with animal feces found knee-high in certain areas.

Authorities had previously issued up to 65 civil citations due to the conditions in Giustino’s house since 2014. Efforts to install cooling units were ineffective, leaving the situation unchecked for many years.

Giustino was charged with specific misdemeanors to enable authorities to rescue the animals. The authorities hope the legal process might lead to mental health treatment for her.

In the aftermath, many animals have shown signs of healing. By July 29, 108 animals had been kindly received by the humane society. Community members displayed an outpouring of support, contributing food and expressing interest in adopting the animals once they become available.

On July 24, a reunion held outside the shelter attracted large crowds. Some pet owners experienced emotional reunions, while others left in tears when their long-lost pets were not among the rescued animals.

One heartfelt story involves Linh Nguyen, who was reunited with her cat Patchy after he disappeared seven months earlier. She had prayed persistently for his return and was relieved when Patchy was found among the rescued animals.

The Humane Society continues efforts to reunite pets with their rightful owners. Plans for unclaimed animals’ future adoptions remain flexible until they ensure all owned animals return to their homes.
