Florida State’s Coaching Search Sparks Interest Amid Buyout

The coaching landscape at Florida State University has dramatically shifted. The university has decided to part ways with head coach Mike Norvell following a challenging start to the season, marked by a 3-5 record. The standout aspect of this decision is Florida State’s readiness to pay Norvell’s substantial buyout, estimated at roughly $50 million.

By doing so, Florida State opens up one of college football’s prime coaching positions. The search for a new head coach is underway, igniting speculation about potential candidates.

The College Football Coaching Search

There’s anticipation that Florida State will target an established coach, yet there is a lesson in recent coaching hire histories. The Kentucky Wildcats, for instance, opted to appoint Will Stein, Oregon’s offensive coordinator, after parting with veteran coach Mark Stoops. This choice has proven successful, as Kentucky currently leads the SEC.

“Some programs think they need to make a big splash hire, when in actuality, the best candidates are often the ones hiding in plain sight.”

Brooks Austin, a college football analyst, keeps an eye on rising talents. He sees great potential in coordinators like Buster Faulkner from Florida and Kevin McGiven from Utah. While Faulkner’s reputation has faced challenges recently, McGiven’s innovative offensive strategies in Utah, scoring nearly 39 points per game, show promise.

Austin notes that though McGiven’s approach is creative, the impatience of fans in more competitive conferences could present challenges if results aren’t immediate.

Potential Defensive Coordinator Options

Besides offensive minds, Austin identifies promising defensive coordinators. Glenn Schumann at Georgia stands out for his defensive acumen and teaching ability. Bryant Haines at Indiana is noted for his energetic approach, while Louisiana Tech’s Luke Olson, highly respected despite his young age, also merits attention.

As Florida State moves forward in its search for a new head coach, it has numerous choices with impressive credentials.
