Former Haitian President Michel Martelly Returns Amid Investigation

Former Haitian President Michel Martelly returned to Haiti on Wednesday. This marked a rare visit for him to his homeland. Though he has not specified his reasons for traveling back, local media suggest he might testify in the ongoing investigation into the July 2021 killing of former President Jovenel Moïse. Martelly has not been accused or charged in relation to the case and last visited Haiti about three years ago in connection with the investigation.

Several dozen supporters welcomed Martelly, who served as president from 2011 to 2016 and currently resides in the United States. As he moved through the crowd, he did not respond to questions. Supporters celebrated his arrival by playing music and holding pictures of him, while chanting, “The father is back!” and “Long live Martelly!”

Martelly had selected Moïse as his successor. Both belong to the Tèt Kale Party (PHTK), a significant entity in Haitian politics that did not put forward a candidate for the forthcoming general elections, which have not been conducted for over a decade.

Martelly, also known by his musician name “Sweet Micky,” has been accused of corruption for a long time. In November 2022, Canada sanctioned him, followed by the U.S. in August 2024, alleging that he facilitated drug trafficking and supported multiple gangs. The U.S. Department of State stated, “It is unacceptable for Haitian political and economic elites to plunder Haiti’s future.”

In December 2025, the Council of the European Union imposed a travel ban and asset freeze on Haitian politicians, including Martelly, accusing them of arming and financing gangs for political agendas, territorial control, and safeguarding personal and economic interests. Additionally, Haiti’s Anti-Corruption Unit accused Martelly of asset misrepresentation.

Martelly has not made public statements regarding these accusations. His visit occurs amid Haiti’s persistent challenges with substantial poverty and rising gang violence.
