France’s Bastille Day Celebrations Highlight European Unity and Support for Ukraine

Ukrainian pilots and troops were prominently featured in France’s Bastille Day celebrations on Tuesday, symbolizing European support for Ukraine. This year’s event highlighted military collaboration and showcased European defense capabilities.

On what was President Emmanuel Macron’s last Bastille Day as president, he hosted around 30 other leaders. The event aimed to display European unity amidst global tensions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy received a warm ovation from the European leaders, and Ukrainian troops were applauded by crowds along the Champs-Elysees. Macron and Zelenskyy shared several embraces at the parade’s conclusion.

The Historical Significance of Bastille Day

The Bastille Day celebration coincides with significant historical and contemporary events. Originally commemorating the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789, the holiday marks the symbolic start of the French Revolution. Presidents often use the day to celebrate French achievements, while communities across the country engage in festivals and picnics. The main event is the Parisian parade, held under the Arc de Triomphe and inspired by festivities worldwide.

Ukraine’s Role in the Parade

Zelenskyy joined Macron and other heads of state in a special viewing area. Ukrainian troops marched on the avenue, while Ukrainian co-pilots participated in the flyover alongside French pilots. Lance Cpl. Patrick Risso expressed pride at marching with the Ukrainians, anticipating strengthened bonds with NATO.

Troops from various European nations opened the parade, representing a coalition supporting Ukraine’s postwar security. Aircraft from a range of countries participated, marking the parade as being the largest ever in troop numbers, with 7,600 soldiers marching this year, compared to 5,810 in 2025.

Bastille Day and Concurrent Events

The holiday coincided with France facing off against Spain in a World Cup semifinal match. As Macron interacted with spectators, the nation eagerly anticipated the game. French tricolor decorations were widespread, and fan zones filled up before the match.

The timing of the Tour de France stage was adjusted to avoid conflicting with the parade. Spectators enjoyed the celebrations despite outdoor event cancellations due to raging forest fires and extreme heat.

Challenges With Extreme Weather

France battled forest fires in the Fontainebleau forest and other areas during its third heat wave this year. As a result, authorities canceled fireworks and traditional events in several regions, including Paris. Nonetheless, the Eiffel Tower’s fireworks and drone display proceeded, even featuring a drone formation resembling the Statue of Liberty.
