Los Angeles Mayoral Fundraising Dynamics

In the latest campaign financing reports, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass significantly outpaced her opponent, Councilmember Nithya Raman, in fundraising efforts during the initial period of the general election. Bass raised more than $510,000 in June, marking her campaign’s highest monthly intake so far. In comparison, Raman raised slightly over $170,000 in the same timeframe, covering contributions up to June 30.

Bass also qualified for more than $675,000 in publicly funded matching funds from the city, culminating in over $1.1 million raised for June. Raman’s campaign, while receiving more than $500,000 in matching funds, managed a total of just under $750,000 for the period.

The mayor attributed her successful fundraising month to widespread voter engagement, stating, “It’s no accident that June was our strongest month of the entire campaign. It shows that Angelenos understand the stakes of this election and are fully invested in winning this race in November.”

Primary and Election Results

Bass and Raman emerged as leading candidates in the city’s June 2 mayoral primary election, proceeding to a runoff scheduled for November 3. The primary saw Bass securing approximately 34% of the votes, while Raman garnered 29%. Initially, Spencer Pratt, a former reality TV star, was the runner-up on election night, but Raman ultimately overtook him as mail-in ballots came in, securing the second-place position by June 8.

Financial Contributions and Campaign Strategies

Raman criticized Bass’s financial support base, suggesting that it was linked to established interests. Companies such as Airbnb and Douglas Emmett Properties appeared among Bass’s contributors. According to Raman, “Corporate landlords and other powerful interests are spending record sums to preserve the status quo.” Despite this, Raman emphasized the grassroots nature of her campaign, supported by numerous small-dollar donors, aiming to deliver the change desired by city residents.

Bass’s campaign received contributions from notable figures including director J.J. Abrams and Debra Lee, former CEO of BET. Additionally, city councilmembers Imelda Padilla and Heather Hutt donated smaller amounts. Raman’s contributions came from both progressive and establishment figures, such as Rick Cole, a former City Controller aide, and Laura Chick, a former City Controller recognized for challenging the status quo.

Implications of Campaign Financing

The funds amassed will be pivotal for acquiring television and social media advertisements and executing direct mail strategies. Notably, candidates cannot utilize funds raised during the primary for general election expenses. In the primary, Bass amassed over $3.2 million, while Raman collected under $1 million. Both candidates had reached the maximum matching funds allowed, equating to $1,257,000.

Bass’s campaign had a longer preparation period, having announced her reelection bid in July the prior year, whereas Raman commenced her campaign at the filing deadline in February. Bass also benefited from significant support from independent expenditure groups, which allocated more than $2.5 million in her favor and $1.2 million against Raman. In contrast, only $88,000 was spent supporting Raman.
