Gavin Newsom’s Presidential Decision Amidst Kamala Harris Speculation

California Governor Gavin Newsom clarified his stance on running for president if Kamala Harris enters the race. In a discussion with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Newsom said he would not challenge Harris, the former Vice President.

Newsom stated, “I don’t know if she runs, but we’ll see. But I wouldn’t run if she ran.” Tapper, surprised, asked for confirmation, to which Newsom replied, “Of course not. Why would I? I wouldn’t do that to her.” He expressed that competing against Harris would be unnecessary and wasteful.

The conversation took place while Tapper and Newsom were fly-fishing in Montana. Newsom suggested that party members might focus on the destructive competitiveness within the Democratic ranks if he and Harris ran simultaneously. Tapper, contemplating an opposing view, noted, “You know, she had her shot,” suggesting Newsom’s candidacy might offer fresh opportunities. Newsom acknowledged this viewpoint as a valid campaign approach.

Despite his support for Harris during previous election cycles, Newsom recognized the overlap in their supporter bases. He said, “The Venn diagram on that is just pure crossover. I wouldn’t do that.” His name frequently appears in discussions about potential candidates for 2028. However, Harris leads him significantly in Democratic circles, standing at 24.5% compared to Newsom’s 13.5%, according to recent polls.

Other potential contenders include Pete Buttigieg, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Jon Ossoff, all within a narrow margin of Newsom. Although Harris leads in political support, different betting markets show Ocasio-Cortez ahead with 19% odds, followed by Ossoff and Newsom, while Harris lags behind at 8%. This illustrates a diverse competitive landscape in the political betting field for 2028.
