On August 26, devastating floods and landslides in Nepal resulted in thousands of casualties and missing persons. In response, Generation Z in Nepal took charge of rescue and relief efforts. Initially focusing on distributing relief materials, one team shifted to on-the-ground rescues after witnessing the extensive damage. Sunil Singh, a young Nepali, emphasized the readiness of his generation to lead these critical tasks, expressing this sentiment to the Nepali outlet Ratopati.

Prakash Bam, secretary of the National Gen Z Citizen Campaign, highlighted the challenges still faced as some individuals remain trapped, urging the government to intensify rescue efforts, even if international assistance is needed. This frustration towards government response is echoed by young adults in both Nepal and the U.S., prompting them to initiate independent action.

Community-Led Initiatives: The U.S. Example

Following the Eaton Fire in Altadena, California, community members founded A Resilient Tomorrow (ART) to address gaps they perceived in disaster response. Savannah Bradley, co-director of ART, noted the insufficient governmental disaster aid services. In light of this, ART continues to host advocacy and support drives aimed at enhancing community resilience.

Data from GoFundMe in June showed that 57% of Gen Z individuals budget for donations annually, with priorities including social justice, politics, and children’s charities. This reflects a broader trend among Gen Z towards proactive community involvement.

Young Political Voices: Engaging Debates

Maxwell Frost, the first Gen Z member in U.S. Congress, showcased the politically engaged spirit of his generation in a discussion on Jubilee’s YouTube show. Highlighting issues such as student loan debt, Frost emphasized that Gen Z is not too spoiled or lazy but highly involved politically.

Despite facing opposition from older generations, Frost maintains confidence in his views, recounting positive engagement with those present at the event. His active participation is a testament to Gen Z’s commitment to shaping the political landscape.

Innovative Campaigns: Attracting Gen Z Voters

Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed demonstrates creative campaigning approaches aimed at Gen Z. Utilizing a format inspired by popular culture, his ‘Senate Island’ spoof seeks to engage young voters through humor and relatable content, avoiding traditional campaigning methods.

El-Sayed’s unconventional strategy seeks to address young voter disengagement by employing innovative and creative messaging. His approach contrasts with that of Republican candidate Mike Rogers, who appeals to Gen Z through promises of affordable housing and unlocking homeownership.
