Stanton’s Season Hampered by Injuries
Giancarlo Stanton’s challenging season continues with another injury setback. The 36-year-old New York Yankees player was recuperating from a strained right calf, aiming for a September return, when he strained his left calf during base running. This setback casts doubt on his 2026 season.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone explained, “It’s a moderate grade. What that means moving forward, we’re not ruling anything out. He’ll continue working to try and get it right. It’s a challenging point in the calendar but you never know. Obviously, we are bummed for him.”
Stanton, wearing the number 27 jersey, faced the Kansas City Royals at Yankee Stadium on April 18, 2026. The team won against the Royals 13-4.
A Slow Recovery Process
Stanton has been dedicated to his recovery every single day, eager to return to the field and contribute to the Yankees’ pursuit of a championship. The injury disappointment is palpable, but efforts to regain his health continue.
The calf strain originally occurred while Stanton was running between bases during a 12-4 Yankees victory over the Houston Astros on April 24. Though nearing a June return, another calf strain in the same leg delayed progress further.
Stanton resumed running activities two weeks ago and faced Carlos Rodón in practice while Rodón nursed an elbow injury. “It’s been a tough road. He reinjured a different part of the calf muscle halfway through, and now this. You feel for G because he wants to be in there, but it is what it is. We’ve got to keep moving and hopefully get him right to be in the mix by the end,” Boone commented.
Yankees Struggling Offensively
Since Aaron Judge’s lineup absence due to injury in June, the Yankees have seen one of their weakest offensive seasons. Stanton’s anticipated return was meant to revitalize the lineup.
This season, Stanton has played 24 games, maintaining a batting average of .256 with three home runs and 14 RBIs.
Stanton’s Injury History
Injuries have been a frequent hurdle for Stanton since joining the Yankees. After his first complete season in 2018, he missed 266 out of 708 games over five years due to various muscle strains and inflammations.
In 2024, Stanton overcame a strained left hamstring and played a crucial role in the Yankees reaching their first World Series since 2009 by hitting 27 homers and 72 RBIs in 114 games.
Last year, tendon inflammation in both elbows sidelined him for 70 games. Upon returning, he posted a .273 average with 24 homers, 66 RBIs, and a .944 OPS in 77 games.
The Yankees, trailing the Tampa Bay Rays by three games in the American League East at the start of the weekend, will need to close the gap without their star batter.
