Pritzker’s Campaign Focus

On Wednesday, Governor JB Pritzker initiated a statewide campaign bus tour, emphasizing his criticism of former President Donald Trump. As he seeks a third term, Pritzker blamed Trump for many challenges Illinois has faced during his tenure. He stressed the importance of focusing on working families, affordability, and combating the damage he attributes to Trump’s administration.

Speaking outside the Adler Planetarium, Pritzker highlighted his priorities alongside Christian Mitchell, his running mate. The governor has ramped up his criticism of Trump, asserting that the upcoming gubernatorial election is as crucial as the presidential one for Illinois voters. He argues that Trump’s policies negatively impacted the state.

Opponent’s Connection to Trump

Pritzker pointed to his opponent, Darren Bailey, and his ties to Trump, using this association to his advantage in the campaign. Bailey, a conservative former lawmaker, previously supported Trump, who endorsed Bailey’s initial gubernatorial run in 2022. Bailey lost that race by nearly 13 percentage points to Pritzker. Trump has consistently been unpopular in Illinois, losing the state by more than 10 percentage points in the last three presidential elections.

Pritzker claimed his administration successfully managed the difficulties caused by Trump’s policies, maintaining balanced budgets and supporting public services like healthcare and food assistance.

Bailey’s Criticism

While at a Tyson Foods plant in northwest Illinois, Bailey criticized Pritzker’s economic management. Following a significant layoff announcement from Tyson, Bailey accused Pritzker of failing to replace lost jobs and attributing closures to national conditions.

Pritzker described the Tyson layoffs as a serious issue but redirected attention to national trends like rising beef prices and similar closures elsewhere. He also continued to criticize Bailey’s association with Trump, labeling Bailey a “Donald Trump sycophant.”

Education and Curriculum Controversy

While addressing reporters, Pritzker didn’t initially mention Bailey by name but responded to questions by questioning Bailey’s curriculum at Full Armor Christian Academy. Bailey defended the academy’s teachings, which include scientifically disproven claims.

The Bailey campaign countered Pritzker’s criticism, reporting a threatening message received by the school. Bailey called out Pritzker’s rhetoric as reckless, given the involvement of children.

Union Support and Legislative Achievements

Pritzker’s campaign tour included a visit to the Painters District Council 14, aligning with International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District Council 14. This rally emphasized his support among union members, key allies for Democrats. The governor also gained support from the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150, representing over 24,000 workers.

Christian Mitchell, Pritzker’s running mate, attacked Bailey by calling him a detriment to union workers, claiming his policies echo those of former Republican Governor Bruce Rauner, known for anti-union stances.

Later, Pritzker signed laws to establish regulations for high-speed e-bikes, e-scooters, and electric unicycles, effective next year. He also announced an 11th credit upgrade for Illinois from a major Wall Street ratings agency since 2021.
