Graham Platner Faces New Allegations Amid Campaign Crisis

U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner, embroiled in allegations of sexual misconduct, faces increased scrutiny as a crucial campaign decision deadline approaches. Following an accusation of rape, a new report from The Washington Post adds further allegations of sexual impropriety.

Lyndsey Fifield, Platner’s ex-girlfriend, claims he removed condoms during intercourse despite her instructions to use them. She stated, “He would pull condoms off. He would do it in a sneaky way. He wouldn’t tell me.” These allegations follow previous claims by Fifield of physical misconduct, which Platner’s supporters have largely dismissed, labeling her a conservative operative.

Fifield, 41, recounted confrontations with Platner about the condom removal, emphasizing the risks due to her not using birth control. The Washington Post reported these allegations were made in a prior interview but initially off the record. Platner’s campaign has declared these accusations “categorically false and politically motivated.” Platner is running to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins in Maine.

Further complicating matters, another woman, Jenny Racicot, 41, accused Platner of rape. She alleges the incident occurred in 2021 when Platner, while heavily intoxicated, entered her home and ignored her requests to stop, resulting in non-consensual intercourse. Platner has denied these allegations in a video response.

With a deadline to withdraw from the race by July 13 approaching, leading figures within the Democratic Party have rescinded their endorsements and urged Platner to depart from the race. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, key supporters of Platner, have publicly called for his resignation. Warren expressed the necessity for leaders in Washington who embody the party’s values, stating, “There can be no tolerance for sexual assault.” Sanders has echoed the call for Platner to step aside in light of these allegations.

The ongoing scandals have led to a loss of support from Democratic leaders, with wider implications for the party’s prospects in the Maine Senate election.
