Graham Platner, a progressive oyster farmer who has shaken up Maine’s political establishment, secured the Democratic nomination for Senate, according to The Associated Press. This victory comes despite concerns about his past that have unsettled some in his party. The nomination sets up a competitive race against incumbent Senator Susan Collins, a Republican known for her resilience against previous Democratic challenges.
Platner’s win was anticipated after his main rival in the Democratic primary, Governor Janet Mills, ended her campaign in late April. His campaign has criticized Collins, with Platner promising to push for progressive legislation if elected. His plans include codifying abortion rights and implementing a single-payer health care system, often referred to as Medicare for all.
In his victory speech, Platner addressed the scrutiny of his past, urging voters to focus on the larger movement he represents. He emphasized that his campaign is about the struggles of ordinary people in Maine, rather than personal narratives.
In trying so hard to understand me, they failed to understand that this is not about me at all.
The contest between Collins and Platner is expected to be among the most expensive and fiercely contested Senate races nationally. The stakes are significant, with Maine being the only state where a Republican-held Senate seat is on the ballot in a place that President Trump lost in 2024. For Democrats to gain a Senate majority, they need to win four Republican-held seats.
Platner, 41, outperformed his Democratic rivals, including Mills, who remains on the ballot but has not endorsed Platner. Another candidate, David Costello, a former Maryland state government official, gained minimal support. With 37 percent of votes counted on Tuesday night, Platner led with 72 percent to Mills’ 19 percent, while Costello collected 8 percent.
