Highland Park’s Memorial Day Observance: Honoring Veterans and Community Spirit

The City of Highland Park celebrated its annual Memorial Day observance in a meaningful ceremony held at Highland Park High School’s auditorium. This event, which took place on May 25, gathered the community to honor veterans and reflect on shared values.

Mayor Nancy Rotering expressed the significance of the occasion, highlighting the opportunity to unite and celebrate the community and the country. The observance featured various speeches, performances by the Highland Park High School Band, and a poignant rendition of “Taps” by bugle players.

One of the standout elements was the bell ceremony organized by the Jewish War Veterans Post 29. The final bell ring serves as a symbolic tribute to veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Guest speakers included U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Ryan M. Dunbar and honoree Sonja Marie Martin, a retired U.S. Army staff sergeant. Dunbar praised Highland Park, where he has resided since July, for its wonderful community spirit. Martin, a resident since 2011, shared her appreciation for the welcoming community and expressed her honor at being a guest speaker.

Memorial Day also served as a reminder of the tragic events on July 4, 2022. Martin reflected on the resilience of Highland Park, emphasizing the community’s ability to unite in adversity and strengthen the local bonds.

Another participant, Linda Iovino, represented the American Legion Auxiliary of North Shore American Legion Post #738. She shared the inspiring story of her father, Neil P. Iovino, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps and endured three years as a prisoner of war during World War II.

Linda Iovino voiced her respect for veterans and stressed the importance of appreciating their sacrifices for freedom. Her message resonated with attendees, encouraging them to cherish the nation’s liberties.
