Historic Viewership as U.S. Men’s Team Faces Bosnia and Herzegovina

The U.S. men’s national soccer team captured significant attention when they played against Bosnia and Herzegovina. This match was not only keenly anticipated but also set a new record in U.S. broadcast history.

According to Nielsen, the game aired on Fox and averaged 24.43 million viewers, with numbers peaking at 31.88 million. This audience size established it as the most-watched English-language soccer broadcast in U.S. history.

Prior to this, the record was held by the 2015 Women’s World Cup final between the U.S. and Japan, which averaged 22.32 million viewers. Telemundo’s Spanish broadcast added another 9.1 million viewers, bringing the total viewership to 33.53 million, a groundbreaking number for a soccer broadcast in the U.S.

Throughout the World Cup, ratings have repeatedly surpassed previous records. Every U.S. World Cup match has drawn significant interest, bolstered by the team’s quest to progress further in the tournament.

This particular match held additional significance as the U.S. sought to secure their first knockout stage win since 2002, after experiencing a group stage setback against Turkey. Bosnia and Herzegovina aimed to disrupt the U.S. run after qualifying from Group B in third place.

The game ended in a 2-0 victory for the U.S. However, the match saw controversy when star striker Folarin Balogun received a red card. This affected the U.S. team dynamics as they played the last 25 minutes with one fewer player and meant Balogun would miss the upcoming Round of 16 match against Belgium.
