The New York Rangers are gearing up for their season opener against the Boston Bruins. In preparation, the team has made strategic moves, placing several players on waivers.
Information from PuckPedia indicates that the players affected are Urho Vaakanainen, Juuso Parssinen, Dennis Cholowski, and Justin Dowling. Among these, Vaakanainen stands out as a key figure.
Vaakanainen, a 27-year-old defenseman, played 34 games with the Rangers last season, contributing six assists. In the previous season, he had split his time between the Anaheim Ducks and the Rangers, recording two goals and a total of 16 points in 51 games, with a plus-8 rating.
Parssinen, another player now on waivers, participated in 20 games for the Rangers last season, tallying two goals, one assist, and a plus-4 rating. He also had some impactful performances in the AHL, scoring five goals and accumulating seven points across 15 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack during the 2025-26 season.
Meanwhile, Cholowski divided the past season between the New Jersey Devils and the Utica Comets of the AHL. During his stint with the Devils, he achieved two assists over 17 games. In the AHL with the Comets, the former first-round pick contributed five assists.
Justin Dowling experienced a quieter season in the NHL, remaining point-less in two games with the Rangers. He spent the majority of his time in the AHL with Hartford, where he scored nine goals and garnered 29 points in 46 games.
The coming days will reveal whether the Rangers lose any of these players through waivers as the season approaches.
